Frequently Asked Questions

Updated Monday September 10, 2018 by Douglas Youth Basketball.

Q. What programs do Douglas Youth Basketball (DYB) offer and to whom?

A. DYB offers intramural programs that are open to all Douglas children (residents and school-choice) from grades K - 12. Our co-ed intramural programs are broken down by the following grades; K & 1,  2 & 3, 4 - 7 and 8 - 12. The mission of our intramural programs is to create a fun and learning environment, with a focus on teamwork and sportsmanship, while providing each child with the fundamentals required to continue their development and involvement in the game of basketball. All players wishing to participate in our intramural programs should be registered by November 1st.

DYB also offers a travel program as part of the South Central MA Youth Basketball League (SCMYBL). The teams offered depend on whether SCMYBL offers a league for that age group and whether there is enough interest from the Douglas youth of that age group to form a team. Selection to the travel teams is determined through a formal tryout process. All players wishing to try out for a grade and gender specific travel team must be registered by Saturday, Oct. 14th.

Q. How do I sign up?

A. Our preferred method of registration is through our website. Simply click the link in the “Registration Now Open” banner on our home page and follow the directions. Please contact Ryan Hogan at with any issues.

Q. How much is the registration fee?

A. Kindergarten & 1st graders pay $50, 2nd & 3rd graders and 4th - 7th graders playing in our intramural program will pay $60.  8th - 12th graders players playing in our intramural program will pay $20, and all Travel Team players will pay $100 for the year. There are multiple child/children discounts available. Any additional child/childrend will receive a $25 discount, which is applied in the payment field when registering. The registration fee does include a team t-shirt for children participating in any of our intramural programs, but does not include a team uniform for travel team players. Travel team uniforms cost approximately $70. Uniforms can typically be worn for multiple years if purchased slightly larger than required.

Q. When do sign ups end?

A. Sign ups for Travel Team players end on Sunday, October 7th.  It is VERY important that you meet the sign up deadline because we may start our travel team tryouts as early as the week of October 19th. The travel teams must be selected by the first of November so they can begin to prepare for their first games, which are typically played on the weekend before Thanksgiving. In addition, sign ups for Intramural players end on November 1st. It is critical that players are signed up on time so that DYB may plan the appropriate structure for our intramural programs, which is based on the number of players in each age group.

Q. My son/daughter will be trying out for the travel team. Can they also play in the Intramural program?

A. At this time DYB does not allow travel team players to participate in our intramural programs, though some exceptions are occasionally granted. One such exception is players playing on 7th and 8th grade travel teams, that did not make the Middle School team, may play in the DYB 7th - 12th grade intramural program.

Q. How are children selected for the travel teams?

A. DYB will hold tryouts during the last two weeks of October for all the travel teams. The DYB board will appoint independent evaluators to run the tryouts, evaluate the players, and select the teams based on their evaluations. Coaches for the teams are selected after the players are selected. Parents are not allowed to participate in the selection process of a team when they have a child trying out for that particular team.

Q. When are tryouts for the travel program?

A. DYB usually holds travel tryouts in the middle of October, but can start them as early as the 2nd week of October, so it is very important that you register your child by the registration deadline date. We will post a notice for all travel team tryout dates on our website’s home page shortly after the travel player's registration deadline passes.

Q. What if I cannot afford the DYB fees?

A. Contact the DYB board. The board may waive the fee, reduce the fee, or set up a payment plan in certain hardship situations. We are committed to getting every child who wants to play out there on the court.
